In honour of the Japanese-American veteran troopers who bravely fought during WWII, the sage Karate master, Mr Miyagi, travels to Boston to attend a ceremony. There, in this unlikely place, Miyagi is introduced to the 17-year-old troubled teenage girl, Julie, who is constantly angry at the world and her abusive schoolmates, still unable to come to terms with the untimely loss of her parents. But before long, Julie will become Miyagi's new pupil, hopeful of teaching the rebellious youngster the true meaning of karate and self-esteem, through the knowledge of self-defense and respect for all living things. Could Julie be the next Karate Kid?
Mr. Miyagi is back and he takes a new pupil under his wing; a troubled adolescent girl.
This is one of those harmless sequels that seems to draw unnecessary ire. This is a "rip-off" sequel, but the cast plays it well, and it's true to its formula. Michael Ironside is a fine villain. And Hillary Swank, who went on to win a Best Actress Oscar, shows sparkle and potential in the lead. There are many worse movies to rent to watch with your niece. My score – 6/10.
If this was my only encounter with Hillary Swank, I would have thought that they picked some young actress to fill this role. I didn't realize she would develop into one of our best actresses. I won't go into detail. It's another rehash of the training that a martial arts person needs to face. This young woman is a bit of a challenge to Pat Morita (what else is new). There are some new rules for her to become what she needs to become and that is the gist of this. The story is quite predictable, although the setting is interesting. If this film had not been made for more than a paycheck it would have been fine. It would be fun for a young woman, I guess.
Clearly, three sequels haven’t improved Miyagi’s English, but there is something bitchin’ about seeing a babe give a bully a good thwack. Not that girls will go see this or boys will care.
